Let x = nickels, and y = quarters.
So we have, x + y = 20 be Equation #1 and x = 20 - y

Because each nickel = $0.05 and each quarter = $0.25,
so we have 0.05x + 0.25y = 2.60 be Equation #2

Using Equation #1 and substitute into Equation #2, we get
0.05(20-y) + 0.25y = 2.60
1 - 0.05y + 0.25y = 2.60
0.20y = 1.60
y = 8 quarters

x + 8 = 20 >>>>>> x = 12 nickels.

Check: 12(0.05) + 8(0.25) = .60 + 2.00 = $2.60 CORRECT
